Air India employees to go on strike on non payment of salaries?

Sources have informed Bloomberg UTV that the Air Industry Employees Guild (AIEG) has alleged in a circular that the employees of the airlines have not received their salaries for the last three months! The amount is estimated to be around Rs 70-80 crore. Sources said that AIEG has also alleged that the employees have not been paid despite revenues and load factor increasing. As last stated by Air India, passenger revenues for August rose to Rs 998 crore from Rs 889 crore, an increase of 12.3% helped by growth in load factor. Also, Air India has received around Rs 1200 crore in equity infusion from the government in 2011-12.

It is learnt that the AIEG had sent out a circular on December 30, 2011, where it highlighted the fact that it has sent a strike notice to the Air India management on the same date.

Christchurch Hit By 5.8 Quake, Airport Evacuated

A strong 5.8 magnitude earth quake in Christchurch earlier today and a series of damaging aftershocks have made it impossible to predict further flight disruptions to the New Zealand city at this stage.

Services from Australia were either diverted mid flight to other NZ cities or cancelled, and all passengers with bookings in the near future must check with their carriers prior to going to the airport at the very least if not previously advised of schedule changes or alternatives.

While Christchurch airport can be opened at short notice which is handy for those flying there from other parts of NZ, the potential disruption on trans Tasman routes will always be greater.

Lebanon pilots call strike over cancer colleague

Pilots at Lebanon's national carrier, Middle East Airlines (MEA), on Monday overwhelmingly voted in favour of a 48-hour strike in protest at the dismissal of a colleague undergoing cancer treatment.

Captain Fadi Khalil, head of the pilots' union, told AFP that the work stoppage from 2000 GMT on Monday to 2000 GMT Wednesday covered all flights.

"We have a colleague, a captain who has served MEA for 38 years, and as soon as he went on sick leave, they terminated his contract," Khalil said.

MEA chairman Mohamed El-Hout, however, dismissed the strike call as "illegal and arbitrary," and said the company's board planned to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

"You cannot announce a strike at 5:00 pm for the same evening," he said, adding that the company in the past had given similar compensation to other sick pilots.

"They are portraying the company as inhumane and this is not justified," El-Hout told AFP.

He did not believe all pilots would follow the strike call and said that flights to Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt and London were still on schedule for Monday evening.
